Quantification of in vitro angiogenesis: segmentation

segmentationSegmentation is the separation of the capillary-like structures from the background. This is accomplished by automatic thresholding the digital image after conversion to an 8-bit greyscale format. Thresholding is based on the histogram of the image and the threshold value is determined automatically using an algorithmic procedure (in this case Otsu 1979), yielding a binary image as a primary extract. Processing the binary image by appropriate filters can eliminate undesired structures, resulting in the final extract.
